CSLDF and AGU Co-Host Symposium on Law and Science

CSLDF AGU logos

On Wednesday, December 14, 2016, CSLDF will team up with the American Geophysical Union (AGU) to host a morning symposium at the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco.  3 MCLE credits will be available for attorneys (application pending).

This symposium will discuss the legal issues facing scientists under open records laws – laws that have increasingly been used to harass, intimidate, and attempt to discredit researchers.

Presenters:

Topics will include how the federal government and different states vary in their treatment of scientific research, and the public policy implications of scientists being required to disclose their emails, peer review materials, and preliminary drafts to potentially adverse groups.  Presenters will also discuss case studies — Peter Fontaine will discuss his defense of six years of Dr. Michael Mann’s emails in American Tradition Institute v. University of Virginia, and Michael Mandig will discuss the ongoing litigation E&E Legal v. University of Arizona, over a 13-year span of two climate science professors’ emails.  Dr. Michael Mann will also provide a keynote discussing his experiences.

The symposium is free for AGU Fall Meeting attendees — please contact AGU staff Elizabeth Landau at elandau@agu.org to get a ticket.  Tickets are $25 for those not already attending the Fall Meeting.  Breakfast and a mid-morning snack are included.

REGISTER HERE.

About our co-host:  AGU is a scientific membership organization representing more than 60,000 geoscientists across the world.  The Fall Meeting, AGU’s annual scientific conference, is the largest Earth and space conference in the word, with 24,000 attendees in 2015.
